Alex was born in Africa, travelling the world before settling in England as a teenager. Her early influences were wide ranging, from old masters such as Rembrandt to the impressionists including Van Gogh. Primarily her interest in these groups was steeped in their drawing techniques and strong use of tone and colour.

As well as working on portraits and still lives in her studio she has continued to paint figures in their environment throughout her career. Sea and landscapes are usually painted en plein air where the constantly changing weather is inspirational, demanding and exciting. She continually manages to capture the atmosphere and intensity of the moment fully through this close relationship with her subject.
